2026 International Credit Union Day

At Horizon Credit Union, we believe in the credit union philosophy of People Helping People. This October, we’re proud to join 16 other Spokane-area credit unions for a day of service benefiting Our Place Community Outreach, a nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals and families access basic necessities and support during times of need.

For more than a decade, Spokane credit unions have come together each year to celebrate International Credit Union Day through a shared community service project. This annual tradition highlights the cooperative spirit that unites credit unions and demonstrates the impact we can make when we work together for the good of our communities.

This year’s project supports Our Place Community Outreach, an organization that provides free services including food, clothing, hygiene products and laundry facilities to community members facing challenges. As demand for these resources continues to grow, volunteers from participating credit unions will lend their time and energy to help the organization continue its important work.

On Oct. 15, credit union volunteers will assist with a variety of hands-on projects, including:

  • Distributing food to community members
  • Sorting donated clothing
  • Removing flooring
  • Painting facility spaces
  • Cleaning and preparing outdoor areas for the fall season

“Partnerships like this are at the heart of the credit union cooperative model,” said Deanna Hanley, president and CEO of Spokane City Credit Union. “When credit unions come together, we can bring a tremendous amount of time and hands-on help to an organization doing important work for our neighbors.”

Tracie Swanson, executive director of Our Place Community Outreach, shared her appreciation for the collaborative effort.

“Every box of food distributed, every piece of clothing sorted, and every hour spent volunteering helps us care for people in our community with dignity and compassion,” Swanson said. “Our Place is deeply grateful to the Spokane-area credit unions for showing up for our community, not only with financial support, but with their time, energy and hearts.”

International Credit Union Day, celebrated on the third Thursday of October, recognizes the history, achievements and positive impact of credit unions around the world. As member-owned financial cooperatives, credit unions are uniquely positioned to support the communities they serve, both financially and through volunteer efforts.

Horizon Credit Union is honored to stand alongside fellow Spokane-area credit unions in support of Our Place Community Outreach and the important work they do every day. Together, we’re helping strengthen our communities and making a positive difference for our neighbors.
